Parachute colorado oil shale

The Parachute Battlement Mesa community has been built on the oil shale industry. The valley is rich in oil shale which several large oil and gas companies have worked on harvesting for decades. This resource has provided jobs to the area as well as the base for developing more efficient energy. Mt. Callahan, the spectacular peak west of Parachute, was named in his honor. In addition to oil shale, the area is rich in soda ash deposits as well as abundant amounts of natural gas, including propane and butane. Locally produced natural gas and soda ash are now sold throughout the U.S. and the world. Year later Ashland, Cleveland Cliffs and Sohio exited the Colony Shale Oil Project near Parachute, Colorado. Also, Shell exited the Colony project but continued with in-situ test. The United States oil shale industry collapsed when oil prices fell in the early 1980s.

The collapse culminated in Exxon's 1982 closure of the Colony Oil Shale project in Parachute, which threw 2,500 people out of work. Founded in the 1900s, Parachute was the site of one of the most devastating and quickest busts ever seen. On May 2, 1982, Exxon pulled the plug on the Colony Shale Oil Project, since remembered as PARACHUTE – Dick Brammer has seen oil shale come and seen it go. The area manager for Unocal’s oil shale operation on the East Fork of Parachute Creek, Brammer was around during what he calls “the mad rush” of the 1970s, overseeing Unocal’s mammoth 70-square-mile oil-shale-production property north of Parachute. The potentially recoverable shale oil on Unocal property is estimated to be 3.3 billion barrels.
