“The AAO is the antarctic oscillation index also known as SAM (southern annular mode) and in simple terms, it’s basically an index to measure how far north or south the main belt of midlatitude westerlies circling the southern hemisphere is at any given time. The Antarctic oscillation (AAO, to distinguish it from the Arctic oscillation or AO) is a low-frequency mode of atmospheric variability of the southern hemisphere. It is also known as the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). It is defined as a belt of westerly winds or low pressure surrounding Antarctica which moves north or south as its mode of SAM variability has large impacts on Antarctic surface temperatures, ocean circulation, and many other aspects of SH climate. The station-based SAM index, which extends back to 1957, uses records from six stations at roughly 65S and six stations at roughly 40S.
