Also known as bunker fuel or residual fuel oil, HFO is the result or remnant from the distillation and cracking process of crude oil. Visbreaking, a mild form of thermal cracking, significantly lowers the viscosity of heavy crude-oil residue without affecting the boiling point range. Residual from the atmospheric distillation tower is heated (800°-950° F) at atmospheric pressure and mildly cracked in a heater. This work deals with an efficient two-step thermal upgrading process for converting extra-heavy fuel oil to light olefins (ethylene, propylene, and butenes) and fuels (gasoline and diesel fuel). In the first step, mild thermal pretreatment was implemented at different temperatures (360–440 °C) in the liquid phase to obtain a more suitable feedstock for an olefin production unit.
